Video screening: OPEN Art Festival. Beijing, China 2009
Performance Art is a striking and bold visual art, which emanates from the body alone or from its relationship with other materials. It is a live visual art that comes from painting and sculpture.
The 10th OPEN International Performance Art Festival in Beijing, China was the largest performance art festival, with over 300 artists participating from around the world.
Lasting two months, August through September, the festival included different independent curators each week.
JILL MCDERMID, Director of the Grace Exhibition Space curator of WEEK 5, SEPTEMBER 4-6, 2009.
"In curating Week 5, I wanted to highlight the current energy of Performance Art in NYC today. New York was a fertile place for performance art activities until Congress withdrew the NEA grants from performance artists.
Performance art is experiencing a renaissance and we brought ourselves to Open Art to share the vibrancy and diversity of performance art in New York City today." - Jill McDermid

We offer an opportunity to experience visceral and challenging works by the current generation of international performance artists whether emerging, mid-career or established. Our events are presented on the floor, not on a stage, dissolving the boundary between artist and viewer. This is how performance art is meant to be experienced and our mission is the glorification of performance art.
Grace Exhibition Space presents over 30 curated live performance art exhibitions each year, showcasing new work by more than 400 performance artists from across the United States and the world since 2006.
