Controversy: Turning Against is the beginning of a three year curatorial project for performance art at Grace Exhibition Space. This year (fall 2014 and Spring 2015) is dedicated to the concept of controversy in personal life and public spheres as articulated through live art making. Grace Exhibition Space is very pleased to announce the fall schedule for 2014 and the first half of a yearlong program of international artists with controversial practices that beg us to evaluate our understanding of species, society, religion, agriculture, and gender.
Didier Odieu has been keeping Europe on it’s toes since the 80’s with his unconventional music and shocking performances. Poppy Jackson constantly redefines the body with her visceral and controlled durational work. Mideo Cruz has gained notoriety for his scandalized work that analyzes the role of the Church in the Philippines. Alejandro Chellet calls attention to production and waste in industrialized agriculture and asks us to change our relationship with what we eat. Kira O’Reilly has been praised and ridiculed for her performances that include living and slaughtered farm animals with which she empathizes. Finally, Non Grata is the nebulous group of performers and artists concentrated by Al Paldrok (aka Anonymous Boh) which aims to save art from itself and radicalize their audience with an injection of violent imagery, sensory overload, and an abandonment of social codes.

We offer an opportunity to experience visceral and challenging works by the current generation of international performance artists whether emerging, mid-career or established. Our events are presented on the floor, not on a stage, dissolving the boundary between artist and viewer. This is how performance art is meant to be experienced and our mission is the glorification of performance art.
